Self-help, business advice, and personal development books are among the most popular on the market, yet they are also highly controversial. This is due to an overwhelming presence of grifters and snake oil salesmen in the space. Far too many people are actively looking to build and monetize an audience as quickly as possible without truly caring about the long-term impact they have on their readers. Dale Carnegie, one of the founders of these types of works, was the complete opposite.

His passion for self-help and personal development stemmed from an accidental discovery. While living at a YMCA in New York City and teaching a class on public speaking, a young Carnegie realized that when his students spoke about topics that made them angry they suddenly weren’t afraid of the crowds anymore. This was a revelation at the time, and, from it, the Dale Carnegie Course was born.

Within two years, he was the most popular self-confidence and business development teacher in the United States, earning more than $500 a week (around $15k a week in today’s money) with his books read all around the world. By complete accident, he’d discovered a formula that would change his life, create one of the most profitable book sub-industries, and inspire millions of others in the process.
